The two girls catch the bus and sneak back in the house with the help of their sister Dolores (Tika Sumpter), who also sings, but aspires to go to medical school. Stix (Derek Luke), a small-time music manager from Kansas, is instantly on a mission to find the girl who wowed the audience and make her a star. It’s a hit and Sparkle and Sister leave quickly after she sings. Sparkle, 19, finally convinces her older sister, nicknamed Sister (Carmen Ejogo), to go out and sing a song Sparkle wrote. The story opens in Detroit during the 1960s in a club having a singing competition to discover the next hottest act. It’s the story of Sparkle (played by American Idol star Jordin Sparks) who must find the courage to believe in her own gift and overcome her fears and her strong-willed mother’s objection to follow her dreams of being a singer/songwriter. SPARKLE is a remake of the 1976 music drama of the same name. (CCC, BBB, Ab, Ro, LL, VV, S, A, DD, MM) Very strong Christian, biblical, moral worldview with several scenes involving the church, choir, or the pastor, with some less prominent anti-Christian elements presented throughout the story often by Satin’s remarks such as time wasted in prayer, plus some Romantic elements as heroine pursues her dreams toward a composing/singing career 13 obscenities and a few instances of toilet humor and black people saying racial jokes/racial slang three counts of depicted domestic violence with Satin hitting Sister in the face, beating her with a belt, and an accidental death in self-defense fornication implied between engaged couple and several instances of passionate kissing, plus provocative and sensual dancing in short/scant dresses no nudity, but Sister wears extremely short robe and lingerie nightgown light alcohol drinking and one occurrence of Satin becoming verbally abusive after drinking, though not appearing to be drunk smoking, two counts of cocaine snorting depicted, implied cocaine use at other times and, lying, young adults sneaking in and out of parent’s home, cursing and disrespect to reverend and mother, arguing, fighting, and family dysfunction including disobedience and defiance of parents. However, extreme caution is advised for SPARKLE for some domestic violence, drug use, and foul language. The movie also has many transcendent, heartfelt themes such as faith, stewardship, love, and sacrifice. ![]() There are scenes honoring God in prayer and praise in both the home and church. SPARKLE has a strong Christian worldview. This reinforces the movie’s dichotomy between what is godly and what is worldly, saintly versus sinful, or good versus evil. Both gospel music and secular music are performed. Viewers likely will be reminded that Jordin Sparks, as Sparkle, is truly a talented vocalist. There are several successful musical moments.
